A very attractive and nicely preserved c.1865 oil on canvas of George Washington. After the original of Gilbert Stuart [1755-1828], aside from composition, the present is stylistically far afield from Stuart's naturalistic image.
In a very good state with a few minor abrasions to the painting, small repair at the back central as shown. The frame is original and attractive with some gesso loss at top edge and sporadically at edges. Stretcher is a bit buckled. Late 19th century "Stroh" label from Boston.
Measures 14 x 17 inches without the frame, and 17 x 20 with the frame.
A fine example of a highly competent mid-19th century folk naive work.
