This is a really wonderful display item and physical artifact of the missionary revival of the of the mid to late 19th century. Dating is unclear, though we would suggest somewhere between the 1880's and 1890's.

Measuring 4 x 5 x 6.5 inches, this is a slightly larger format box. What's fascinating about it is that it is entirely a one off, constructed or adapted from some other form for the Seaman's Mission. Mounted on top is a solid brass  relcining seaman. He is clearly an "addition" to the box, heavily handled, and I would say dates earlier, perhaps the mid-19th century. Then on the front naively written is "Seaman's Mission" and on the rear, " "The Anchor." It then retains the original chain which would have attached it to a desk or wall so that it could be secured. It opens with screws on the bottom, as originally designed.

Some light separations at joints, but very solid. I really love this example and it appears that it is entirely unique.
