Eternal Conscious Torment Leads to Insanity - Lemuel Haynes

A very rare assemblage of the pro-revival, Christian Universalist periodical edited by Thomas Whittemore (1800–1861), considered the most influential Universalist editor of the nineteenth century.

After the death of his father, he came under the influence of the signifcant Universalist preacher Hosea Ballou, converted, and was ordained into the ministry.

On the publishing front, in 1828, without prior notice to Ballou — who at first resented the action — Whittemore and Russell Streeter established the successor newspaper to Ballou's Universalist Magazine, purchasing the subscription list from the publisher Henry Bowen. Streeter withdrew after a few months, and Whittemore owned and edited it until illness forced him to surrender it shortly before his death. Over the years, the Trumpet absorbed a number of failing Universalist periodicals and gained their subscription lists, and by 1836 it had 5,000 subscribers, making it consistently the most important Universalist publication before the Civil War.

The paper was known for its combative style. Its columns were filled with controversy, both internal to the Universalist denomination and externally, with Whittemore constantly on the offensive against "orthodoxy." Throughout the periodical, revivalism which used eternal conscious torment rather than the love of Jesus as its lever of power and influence, is denounced theologically and often through narratives of people driven insane or to suicide through the teaching.

Theologically, Whittemore and Ballou held the view of ultra-universalism — believing that punishment in the afterlife did not exist — and were opposed to universal restorationism, which claimed that it did. The Trumpet was the primary vehicle for defending and spreading this theology across the denomination. Whittemore also contributed to Universalist historiography by identifying precedents for Universalist beliefs in earlier Christianity, and co-founded the Universalist Historical Society in 1834, with his histories proving influential in leading many readers to regard the Christians of the first centuries as Universalists.

Taken together, Whittemore and the Trumpet were central pillars of the Universalist movement in America for over three decades, shaping its theology, defending it against critics, documenting its history, and connecting its scattered congregations through a common press.

The volume contains nearly two complete years.

Whittemore, Thomas [Ed.].
