Superb Masonic Journal with Detailed Meeting Notes, Discipline, Controversies, &c.

Superb Record book for the Lodge of the Master Masons [Freemasons] for Covington, Ohio, beginning with what appears to be perhaps the originating meeting of the Covington Lodge in November of 1847, and from there rather full meeting notes recorded continuously through October of 1853.

Unusually full, including votes to raise people to The Sublime Degree of Master Mason; people received into FellowCraft, as First Degree Masons; work with Apprentice Masons; on the discipline of one Bro. Johnson, who confessed his guilt and was suspended from the privileges of Masonry for three months; a section amending the By-Laws of the Lodge and requiring open [i.e. public] examination in front of the brethren to inquire into proficiency in the previous degree, etc. to be granted the next degree;

A fascinating section relates to the attendance of a meeting held at Columbus called by the Grand Master of Ohio . . . apparently to address an issue between various lodges. They write to the Grand Master in advance of the meeting,

"That your committee are fully appraised that great diversity in the mode of work exists i the several Lodges in Ohio, so much so that brethren coming together from different Lodges cannot cooperate without fear and discord, much to the regret and disappointment and sorrow of all lovers of harmony. Your committee deems it of sufficient importance to justify a convention of the Master & Wardens of the sub-ordinate Lodges or either of them for the purposes contemplated in the circular is heartily approved and we deem it of such vital importance as cheerfully to sustain the pecuniary loss which must necessarily follow, trusting that we may thereby secure the body of masonry from innovation, etc." [This issue comes up repeatedly]

It seems that regularly the lower level masons are dismissed from the meeting so the "Master Masons" could resume their "labor."

154pp, the majority of which are full, both sides.

Just a brief glance at names mentioned is a who's who of regional Ohio politics, etc., including S. J. Stewart [State Representative]; C. W. Carlton [one of the founders of Covington]; C. W. Beebe [previous Mayor of West Milton in Ohio]; J. C. Moody [who appears to have been a judge in Covington]; W. A. Weston [local businessman and seemingly a one-term State Senator]; John Kensinger; etc.

Also includes a very attractive certificate of transfer from the Warren Lodge at PIqua, Ohio, signed by Jonas Ward and bearing a very attractive freemason seal of the period, i.e. 1847.
