A rather nicely preserved early plain calf binding of the editio princeps in 8vo of the Zurich, Latin Bible, following on the folio of 1543. This original translation into Latin [contra the Catholic Vulgate], still considered the prince of languages by many of the reformers, was begun by Leo Juda. After 18 years of labor, he quit his earthly body [1542], leaving the work not complete. The remainder of the translation was accomplished by Theodorus Bibliander [Ezekiel XLI-XLVIII, Daniel, Job, Psalms CIII-CL, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Solomon]. The Zurich version of the Apocrypha was that of Pietrus Cholinus, and the New Testament that of Erasmus, with minor revisions by Rudolphus Gualtherus [Rudolf Gualter]. The whole was gathered together by Conrad Pellican and published by fabled Swiss publisher, Christoph Froschover.

A fascinating assessment of the relationship of this translation to the Swiss Reformers, here: https://zwingliana.ch/article/view/8393/6922

[Bible, Swiss Reformation] Biblea Sacrosancta Testameti Veteris & Noui, e Sacra Hebraeorum Lingua Graecorumque Fontibus, Consultis Simul Orthodoxis Interpretib. Religiossime Translata in Sermonem Latinum . . . [Three Parts in One, i.e. OT, Apoc, and NT]. Zurich. C. Froschover. 1544. 367 + 92 + 109 leaves, i.e. 734 + 184 + 218pp.

In original calf, rubbed and worn as shown, hinge tender, spine partially relaid. Textually very good, retaining the general title [a variant from the folio edition], and the Apocrypha and New Testament title pages preserving Froschover's usual printer's device of a tree surrounded by frogs. Textually complete and very clean, if somewhat tender at points.
