C. H. Spurgeon ". . . the matter is all the choicest kind. This old folio is like an old skin bottle, with a rough exterior, but filled within with the product of the rarest vintage. Such books as this we never tire of reading." Commenting and Commentaries

Edward Elton [1569-1624]. A rather red-hot puritan who caused such a stir where he preached in Barmondsey near London that upon his death his works were burned publicly. He had no room for innovation, for man-made worship, for any hint of justification by works and deviation from the Gospel of grace.

Elton, Edward. The Complaint of a Sanctified Sinner Answered; or, An Explanation of the Seventh Chapter of the Epistle of Saint Paul to the Romans, Delivered in Divers Sermons. Preached by Edward Elton, Bachelour in Divinity and Preacher of God's Word; and now by Him Published. London. W. Stansby for Robert Mylbourne at the Signe of the Blacke Beare. 1618. 509pp.

Very scarce; only 5 locations [British Library, Oxford, Lambeth, Birmingham, and Cambridge].

Original calf over bound with more recent; perhaps 18th century. No blank ffep. Title is tatty as shown, but complete. The remainder of the text quite good generally with two leaves having ink stains, some general handling, one signature forward in the binding and shaken. Very minor damp stains at extremities toward rear of block. Extensive 17th century history of the Ludlow family on the leaf succeeding the text. Title and final leaf reinforce with no text obscured. Rear pastedown has old recipes for Rhumatism, Consumption, etc.
