During the English Civil War, many of the true believers in the Solemn League and Covenant, especially the divines of the Westminster Assembly, were suspicious that some of the Parliamentarians who had signed on did so with a finger to the political and financial wind . . . and that their insincerity would prevent God's blessing on their aims.

The present, sermon, delivered by Henry Wilkinson [1610-1675], was designed to counteract that tendency. The Westminster group had reason to be suspicious. Many had fled once they heard of a stable space for the King and, rather than acting on principle, were simply trying to survive, or assess who would have land and power to divvy up when the dust settled.

Scarce.
