A rare and desirable sermon by London divine, evangelical, and fierce advocate of religious liberty and independency, Thomas Bradbury. Quite difficult to find as it is core to many collections seeking to explore potential sources for the theological rationale used by American Colonial divines that enabled them to use religious thought as a means of calling Americans to political revolution.

Bradbury, Thomas. The Lawfulness of Resisting Tyrants, Argued from the History of David, and in Defence of the Revolution. Nov. 5. 1713. With some Remarks on Mr. Luke Milbourn's Preface and Sermon. London. Printed by S. Keimer, for N. Cliff and D. Jackson At the Bible and Three Crowns. 1714. vi + 25pp.

Many contemporary historians see this 1713 sermon by Bradbury as bedrock and seed for the arguments asserted in the run up to the American Revolution. See, for instance, Justifying Revolution. The American Clergy's Argument for Political Resistance, 1750-1776 by Steward who gives Bradbury's theology of resistance extensive treatment.

Good, crisp copy in clean condition. Removed from a sammelband, so associated wear at spine.
