1728 ST. JOHN CHRYSOSTOM. Church Father on Being a Faithful Minister. Superb Period Marginal Notes.
A beautifully preserved first edition of Hollier's translation of Chrysostom on the spiritual life, doctrine, character, and faithful duties of the Christian minister. A lovely volume.
This particular copy, from the subscribers' first edition, was that of Lloyd Kenyon [1732-1802]. Whether the marginal notes, which are interesting and rather extensive, are his or not is unclear.
The marginal notes add significantly, including a mss admonition to women to cease meddling in Church government, many devotional and practical reflections on clergy of the 18th century, etc., etc.,
Chrysostom, St. John. St. John Chrysostom, Arch-Bishop of Constantinople, his Six Books, Concerning the Priesthood. Translated from the Greek by Herny Hollier, Late Vicar of Afton in Warwickshire. London. Printed for the Translator; and Sold by G. Strahan. 1728. 208pp.
A very good copy, bound in leather, and very solid. Pages are generally bright, with light foxing, and moderate ink marks in a period hand.
