A lovely double-sided single page unpublished manuscript from Philip Doddridge's unfinished work on the pastoral ministry meant to be produced for the benefit of young and aspiring evangelical clergy.

22 . . . of your Behaviour to them. Make a Shew of Content as to Temporals but not of Plenty. Talke not of Removing till your Way is clear & open to go.

23. Contrives at proper Distances some new popular Projects & Amendments which for a Man in His Seat & Keep up the Spirit & Prospect of the Peoples; & let ones of these precede an Unpopular Innovation. (Seeing altering customs is hazardous) yea & some times follow it to sweeten malcontents.

24. In popular Gusts have Patience to sit still. Give Rope enough, but if you need be, secretly throw blocks in the way on gain Time.

Maxims of Behaviour with relation to peevish & opposite Parties of Dissenters & those infected with their Spirit in the Ministers own Congregation.

25. Always possess the peoples with the great things of religion & the Spirit of Peace & Love.

26. Watch the Last Spark that appears amongst your own People. Take in Times &c. Keep up Familiarity with those in Danger.

27. If your Hearers are infected, cut an issue to draw off the aching humour another way. Start in Conversations and Harmless Controversies & in your preaching have something to puzzle them, not making Mysteries or Difficulties but Presenting Real Ones.
