1741 ROBERT LEIGHTON. The Select Works - First Edition. C. H. Spurgeon Recommends!
A very handsomely preserved edition of the Select Works of Robert Leighton [1611-1684], some of which appear here in print for the very first time.
Leighton was the Archbishop of Glasgow at one of the most challenging times in Scottish history. Fresh off the killing times of the Covenanter wars, both sides were aggrieved. But the personal piety, evangelical fervor, and genuine brotherliness of Leighton seems to have not only held things together, but in many cases made friends and brothers out of bitter enemies.
Spurgeon called Leighton's writings on I Peter a truly heavenly work. That same spirit pervades all he penned.
Leighton, Robert. Select Works of Archbishop Leighton, Some of which were never before printed. To which is prefixed An Account of the Author's Life and Character. Edinburgh. Printed for David Wilson and sold by him and the Booksellers of Edinburgh and Glasgow. M. DCC. XLVI. xxiii + 600pp.
Contents include 28 sermons previously printed, an exposition of the Creed, the Lord's Prayer, The Ten Commandments, and a further 10 sermons never before released.
Very shelf attractive in full calf, respined probably some point in the early 20th century, effectively so. Rubbed at corners, through leather, but attractive and sound. Textually good with some light handling as shown. Last few leaves, being the contents pages, a bit tatty at edges. No blank rfep.
