1745 PHILIP DODDRIDGE. The Family Expositor in Three Large 4tos. Rare Subscribers' Edition
"I know no expositor who unites so many advantages as Doddridge; whether you regard the fidelity of his version, the fullness and perspicuity of his composition, the utility of his general and historical information, the impartiality of his doctrinal comments, or, lastly, the piety and pastoral earnestness of his moral and religious applications." - Spurgeon's Commenting and Commentaries.
An absolutely beautifully preserved Second Subscriber's edition of Doddridge's classic Family Expositor. This would be the first edition, second printing in today's terminology.
Subscribers include prominent dissenting and non-conformist ministers, i.e. Isaac Watts, Robert Trail, Thomas Scott, Thomas Pierce, Daniel Neal, Nathaniel Lardner, Griffith Jones, John Hurrion, John Fletcher, Benjamin Coleman, Edmund Calamy, etc. etc. etc.
Doddridge, Philip. The Family Expositor: Or, a Paraphrase and Version of the New Testament: with Critical Notes; and a Practical Improvement of each Section. Complete in Three Volumes. The Second Edition. London. Printed and Sold by J. Waugh, at the Turk's-head in Gracechurch-street. 1745.
Very attractive in three large quartos, raised bands, tooled spines. Exceptionally crisp, clean and solid. Some rubbing and bumping, surface breaches on hinges. Nothing substantial. Perhaps the best set I will ever handle.
