1754 JOHN GILLIES [ED.]. Scarce First Edition of His Historical Collections of Revivals of Religion.
Alas, only the second installment, but a very scarce first edition of Gillies' monumental work recounting revivals of religion from the entirety of church history. The work has never been surpassed in scope. It was re-issued with fresh material by Horatius Bonar in the 19th century, and then reprinted by Banner of Truth in the 1980's. The first editions are very rare.
Gillies, John. [Ed.]. Historical Collections Relating to Remarkable Periods of the Success of the Gospel, and Eminent Instruments Employed in Promoting it. In Two Volumes. Compiled by John Gillies, One of the Ministers of Glascow. In Magnis Voluisse. Vol. II. Glasgow. Printed by Robert and Andrew Foulis. 1754. 468pp.
A very good copy, very smartly rebound in leather, very solid, with light to moderate foxing. An excellent copy. The last complete copy we had of the first edition sold I believe for $1250.00.
