For revival material collectors, this is a serious find. This is the true first edition of John Gillies' classic history of revivals throughout the scope of Christian history. Its chief value lies in its exploration of revivals during the reformation, puritan, huguenot, and covenanter era. These are often unexplored in other histories, and the miraculous element often dulled. Not in Gillies. It was reprinted in one large, double-column volumn by Banner of Truth, and issued in Scotland between those two times [1845] as well. But the first edition . . . r a r e!
Gillies, John. Historical Collections Relating to Remarkable Periods of the Success of the Gospel and Eminent Instruments Employed in Promoting It. In Two Volumes. [Vol I. Only]. Glasgow. Printed by Robert and Andrew Foulis. 1754. 464pp.
Solid, generally crisp copy in early 19th century plain calf with some wear and rubbing, small split at base of spine. Very stable and still attractive. A bit handled at prelims. Inscription of Alexander Bryce of Falkirk, dating to 1839 on the pastedown.
This volume covers up through c.1705.
We would not be shy about offering the two-volume set, depending on condition, at a price of $800 - $1200. The first volume offered here very affordably.
