A very significant publication, the present work, The Great Christian Doctrine of Original Sin Defended was published immediately after Edwards’ death. It provided the most comprehensive and rigorous defense of the doctrine of original sin at the time, leaning on philosophical ideas, empirical evidence derived from human history, and scriptural exegesis.
It countered the optimistic view of human nature prevalent in pre-Revolutionary America, arguing that humanity possesses an inherent, depraved nature, and was not merely negatively impacted because of societal corruption, etc.
The last example offered at auction fetched just over $2,000. The present in similar condition and an excellent value.
