Very rare first edition of Hugh Gaston's fascinating approach to the "Concordance." He essentially formulates and entire body of divinity and then provides detailed records of the relevant passages to be studied on any given subject.

He begins, as with any body of divinity or systematic theology, with the being and nature of God, etc., then the government of God, of the Covenants, the person of Christ, of the Holy Ghost [on the miraculous effects of the Spirit in the church, etc.], of the Trinity, of the Duties of the Christian, on Prayer, on the Governance of the Heart, and an unusually lengthy section on the occult, including magicians, enchanters, soothsayers, witches, wizards, diviners, false prophets, and familiar spirits, etc. etc.

A lovely, useful book, and an important early Irish evangelical imprint.

Gaston, Hugh, Minister of the Gospel at Ballywillin. A Scripture Account of the Faith and Practice of Christians: Consisting of Large and Numerous Collections of Pertinent Texts of Scripture, upon the Sundry Articles of Revealed Religion. For enforcing the Practice of Gospel Righteousness, and Restraining from Sin by Gospel Motives. Being an Improvement attempted upon every Thing of the Kind hitherto Published, for assisting the Sincere Enquirer after Truth, to know and comply with those Terms of Acceptance with God, which He hath delivered in His Own Word. Dublin. Printed for the Author by S. Powell in Dame-street opposite Fownes's-street, MDCCLXIII. 492 + index.

Very attractive original calf with handsome patination; minor losses at head and tail of spine, some bumping and rubbing. First leaf is the title, likely lacking a blank ffep. Original ownership of James Ewing [related to John Brown of Haddington]. Textually quite good with some light handling as shown.
