Very rare volume of sermons by the Evangelical Rector of St. Stephen's in Bristol. He was friendly with both John Wesley, who praised his piety, and William Romaine. Much like Philip Doddridge, he chose to work for a reviving of the work of grace inside the Church of England. His rich Christology and deep spirituality are evident in the present sermons.

Also, he was a serious philosopher, having translated The Ovid and preaching perhaps the first sermon in English engaging geology to ask questions about the precise relationship between geology and the scientific data of the Old Testament. Of course some today would see this as a good thing and others negatively. In the milieu of the time, it was not seen as theologically provocative.

Catcott, Alexander S. Sermons. Second Edition. London. Printed for Robinson and Roberts. 1767. 491pp.

Sermons include: The Antiquity of the Sabbath, On the Fall, The Incarnation and Exaltation of Christ, The Tabernacle as a Type of Christ, The Zeal of Phinehas, The End of the Righteous and Wicked, etc.

Original full leather binding, elaborately tood on spine, though with 3/8 inch loss at head, small chips at base, hinges through but very solid. Text very crisp and clean.
