1780/1865 GEORGE WASHINGTON. Limited Ed of 100 Court Martial of Benedict Arnold.
Rare facsimile with contextual introduction of the 1780 account of the trial of Benedict Arnold by General Howe and under the direction of George Washington. Scarce in the original three-dimensional binding, limited to an edition of 100 copies.
Washington, George. Proceedings of a General Court Martial of the Line, held at Raritan, in the State of New Jersey, by the Order of His Excellency, George Washington, Esq. General and Commander in Chief of the Army of the United State of America. For the Trial of Major General Arnold, June 1, 1779. Major General Howe, President. Philadelphia. Francis Bailey, 1780. New York. Privately Printed. 1865.
Attractive large 4to in heavy three-dimensional full morocco. As usual, the front board at some point came detached; the weight making it almost inevitable. It has been reattached subdermally as appropriate on both interior and exterior of binding, epidermally to spine. Some rubbing as shown, spine dulled. Title with minor chipping at foredge and the engraving of Arnold present after the title rather than before. Textually very crisp and clean. We trace no similar copies, only examples in wraps.
