1785 JONATHAN EDWARDS. Important Scottish Edition of His Sermons + Account of His Dimissal!
1785 JONATHAN EDWARDS. Important Scottish Edition of His Sermons + Account of His Dimissal!
A very scarce first Scottish imprint of Sermons on Important Subjects by Jonathan Edwards. It not includes standards of Edwardsian pastoral theology like Justification by Faith Alone and Pressing into the Kingdom, but the first Scottish appearance of his Farewell Discourse upon being fired at Northampton. Also, and I believe this is not present in the American edition, it contains a record of the minutes of the ministerial council meeting with the church at Northampton regarding Edwards being dismissed as their pastor. I don't recall seeing that elsewhere.
The present copy has minor ex library from Knox College and was the copy of Hamilton Holt and then presented by Knox College to Thomas Hold while lecturing at Knox, as a memento of his descendent. Also has a discrete personal stamp of Jonathan Edwards scholar, W. H. Kimnach.
Very rare in the trade.
Edwards, Jonathan. Sermons on Various Important Subjects. Boston, Printed. Edinburgh. Reprinted for M. Gray. 1785. vi + 408pp.
Textually very good, clean, and crisp. Inscriptions and minor ex library as noted and shown. Bound in simple red library buckram. Simple and crisp, but I would recommend a rebind; it is worthy of better. We are happy to help facilitate that if you wish.
