1794 NOAH WORCESTER. Important Early History of the Baptists & Baptist Revival in America.

A very scarce example of Noah Worcester’s 1794 treatise, Impartial Inquiries Respecting the Progress of the Baptist Denomination. The pamphlet form work holds the distinction of being among the earliest titles examining the rapid post-Revolutionary growth of the Baptists in New England. 

Though Worcester was himself a Congregationalist, he thought the gathering influence of the Baptists in the years after the Revolution was something worth thinking about. And he seems to have done so rather evenhandedly. Rather than relying on hostile polemics typical of traditional Congregationalists and Presbyterians when addressing other dissenters in early America, Worcester attempted an unusually balanced and analytical evaluation of why the Baptists were gaining so many converts, often at the expense of traditional pedobaptist churches.

He attributes the surging Baptist popularity to their fervent, experiential preaching, their insistence on believer's baptism by immersion as a definitive and decisive Christianizing moment, their effective use of lay ministers, and their strong appeal to everyday citizens who felt alienated by the formal, university-educated Congregational clergy.

As a piece of Americana, the text reflects the early national struggle over religious liberty, church establishment [i.e. what churches could receive tithes], and the democratization of Christianity following the American Revolution, making it a primary source for understanding how established New England ministers grappled with the rise of religious pluralism and the popular evangelical movements that were reshaping the American religious landscape.

Last offered at auction in 1914 and quite rare in the trade.
