We're a big fan of the ordination sermon. They provide a uniquely concentrated and intentional statement of the core values and perspectives of the Church in a given time and place. This is even further concentrated in the "charge" at the end, where the most important functions of the Gospel Ministry are laid on the Pastor as primary sacred duties. Both personally and historically interesting reading.

Excellent ordination sermon for Stephen Bemis [1774-1828], minister of the influential Congregational church at Harvard, Massachusetts. An unusually finely printed discourse; really lovely period embellishments, perhaps as a result of his role in near the University. Well done to the printer, Luther Parker.

Text: Philippians 1.17. I am set for the defence of the Gospel..

Lathrop, Joseph. Ministers set for the defence of the Gospel; and how they are to defend it. A Sermon Delivered at Harvard, June 3, 1801; at the Ordination of the Rev. Stephen Bemis, to the Care of the Congregational Church and Society in that Place. Harvard. Printed by Luther Parker. 1801. 34pp.

Good +. Textually crisp and clean save some minor scattered foxing, heavier on half title. At some point, part of a larger sammelband with associated flotsam to spine and tenderness. A beautifully printed item.
