An absolute charmer, this is a rather rare early American edition of Gillies' life, journals, and writings of Whitefield. At some point early in its life, the original binding deteriorated and it was recased in a naive deer hide binding. We get these on occasion and find them to be just lovely little piece of Americana.
[Whitefield, George]. John Gillies. Memoirs of the Live of the Reverend George Whitefield, M.A. Late Chaplain to the Right Honorable the Countess of Huntingdon: in which Every Circumstance Worthy of Notice, both in his Private and Public Character, is Recorded. Faithfully Selected from his Original Papers, Journals and Letters. Illustrated by a Variety of Interesting and Entertaining Anecdotes, from the best Authorities. With a Particular Account of his Death and Funeral; and Extracts from the Sermons, which were Preached on that Occasion. Compiled by the Rev. John Gillies, To which is now Added, an Extract from Mr. Whitefield's Tracts. New London [Connecticut] Printed by S. Green for Cornelius Davis, N. York. 1798. 274pp.
Good. Full deer hide over-binding and tying attractive and strong. Front board away from spine, but intact as a binding. Rear hinge re-sewn at the period. Textually good + to very good, generally clean and solid.
