1798 RARE BAPTIST. First Edition Philadelphia American Baptist Church Discipline!
1798 RARE BAPTIST. First Edition Philadelphia American Baptist Church Discipline!
An exceptionally scarce piece of early American Baptist history, the second being the very first edition of the Philadelphia, American Baptist Discipline. To my recollection, the only example we have handled of each of these works in 25 years.
Samuel Jones [1735-1814] was educated for the Baptist ministry in Philadelphia, graduating in 1762 and taking the pastor at Lower Dublin [America] in 1763. He held that pastorate until his death. He is often regarded as the most influential Baptist of the 18th century, certainly of the middle colonies. The Philadelphia Association, because of his wisdom, moderation, and leadership as a Baptist, commissioned him to write the new American Church Discipline, in light of post-Revolution realities and the Baptist Church in America's identity in the new Country. A very important document.
