Absolutely charming mid-19th century engraving executed by Gaspard Taliacotius of Isaac Gosset [1735-1812] in attractive mid-century gold frame with custom printed matting, as shown.

Other than some very slight dirtiness to glass and some toning to extremity of engraving, very good condition.

He was known as something of a book fanatic. In the London auction rooms he was known to grow anxious and agitated, obsessing over each rare tome that was brought to the block, bidding and bidding in a sort of mania. These satirical prints of Gosset circulated during his lifetime and nearly made him give up attending the auctions . . . but alas, he did not.

Text:

"A Pretty Copy! [Doing his best, "My Precious" voice, I'm sure]

- he can speak Greek
As naturally as pigs squeak;
That Latis is no more difficile,
Than to a blackbird 'tis to whistle."

A charming gift for your friendly neighborhood bibliomaniac!
