1803 WILLIAM WILBERFORCE. Beautiful Large Vellum Indenture Signed by the Famous Abolitionist Twice + Wax Seal!
A really attractive, frameable piece of ephemera related to the famous abolitionist, William Wilberforce.
Hand-lettered on a large sheet of vellum, measuring c.20 x 30 inches, the present legal document is related to the sale of piece of rolling meadow in Beverly to Rev. Thomas Bowman, probably son of the famed composer and preacher, also Thomas Bowman, who had preached for the Countess of Huntingdon, was one of John Newton's published correspondents, and was an aged friend of William Wilberforce. Under Thomas Bowman, the ministry at Martham experienced a beautiful season of revival in 1774. Worthy of more research on this point. Likely a lovely, personal connection.
Additionally, as with these legal document is the case, there is some detail of Wilberforce's family history recorded on the document as well.
Boldly signed twice, once on the front lower edge, with Wilberforce's personal wax seal still very finely preserved, and once on the rear.
