William Paley’s Natural Theology, first published in 1802 and seen here in its 1804 eighth edition, exerted a profound influence on nineteenth-century Anglo-American philosophy, theology, and science by popularizing the teleological argument for the existence of God. Through his famous "watchmaker analogy," Paley argued that the intricate complexity and purposeful design found in the natural world, much like a complex pocket watch, demanded the existence of an intelligent divine creator.
