Very rare first and only edition of David Porter's influential work against the Baptists, who were then, at least in the mind of Congregationalist and Presbyterian divines, pilfering New England's churches and re-baptizing people already born again as Paul. Largely doctrinal, but the personal and local breaks in throughout the text.

David Porter [b.1761] was a soldier in the American Revolution when just 17 or 18 years old. After the War, he sensed a call to the ministry and took his studies at Dartmouth. He served a Congregational church from 1787-1803 [Spencerville, NY], and the Presbyterian Church in Catskill, NY for the remainder of his ministry.

No copies on the market at the time of cataloguing. Also, a rare Catskill imprint.

Porter, David. A Dissertation on Christian Baptism, and the Subjects Thereof Immediately Connected, Comprised in a Series of Sections. Catskill: Printed by Nathan Elliot. 1809. First Edition. 141pp + contents.

Good textually, heavily handled and apparently originally a slim binding or a part of a sammelband which has long since disappeared. Consequently tender and with associated spine flotsam. The errata sheet has losses, all else complete and legible.
