A very attractive period assemblage of missionary works in a single volume, headlined by Adoniram Judson's important work on Christian Baptism, which retains the original photographic frontis of Judson. The engraving nearly always absent. I would think of the perhaps 5 or 6 copies of this we have handled in 30 years, perhaps one of them had it remaining with the text.
This then followed by Claudius Buchanan's classic missions sermon, A Star in the East. Then a significant work by William Johns. From England, he traveled to work with William Carey at Serampore at the same time Judson was arriving in India. Both were officially expelled by Indian officials. Judson evaded deportation, but Johns did not, likely because he was also a bad fit for Carey, Marshman, and Ward. Deported back to England, his ship was diverted because of the War of 1812, and he spent 1812 and 1813 in America preaching to raise funds for the nascent American Baptist Missionary Society. Then a fine early American missionary sermon by Eliphalet Nott, and E. D. Griffin's foundational American missionary sermon, The Kingdom of Christ. This went through several editions immediately after its publication and helped inadvertently fuel the idealogical merging of the global missionary call with the ambitions of the age of discovery and colonialism.
