1814 JOHN KNOX - SCOTTISH REFORMATION. Life of John Knox by M'Crie in Fine Leather!
A very attractive set of the classic work on the life of John Knox, whose life would again become increasingly important in the 19th century as the Disruption of 1843 again sought to "reform" the Scottish Church. Thomas Chalmers, Horatius and Andrew Bonar, and the hundreds of other ministers who formed the new "Free Church" of Scotland invoked the story of Knox and the Scottish Reformation time and again in the years before and afterward. Time for another?
M'Crie, Thomas. The Life of John Knox: Containing Illustrations of the History of the Reformation in Scotland; with Biographical Notices of the Principal Reformers, and Sketches of the Progress of Literature in Scotland, during a Great Part of the Sixteenth Century. To which is Subjoined an Appendix Consisting of Letters and Other Papers Hitherto Unpublished. Edinburgh. Printed for John Ogle; and William Blackwood, etc., 1814. 449 + 479pp.
Good+ to very good in full calf, polished, dulling to spines, but still very attractive. Hinges just slightly tender, marbled endpapers, early ownership signature of Theed Pearse Jun [probably 1791-1857, town clerk of Bedford UK], some minor foxing. A very handsome set.
