Very tidy full calf early edition of Lindley Murray's [1745-1826] classic work designed to use classic readings on Christian virtue to teach reading, etc.
Our favorite little bit about this volume is the early attractive signature of Submit Adams [1771-1832]. Her name, Submit, is unusual enough. But her mother, also Submit Adams, née Butts [1743-1813], had her outdone. I was simply unable to pass by the purchase of a volume owned by a family bearing such distinguished names.
Murray, Lindley. The English Reader; Or, Pieces in Prose and Poetry, Selected from the Best Writers. Designed to Assist Young Persons to Read with Propriety and Effect; To Improve their Language and Sentiments; To Inculcate some of the most Important Principles of Piety and Virtue with a Few Preliminary Observations on the Principles of Good Reading. Burlington, VT. F.G. Fish for N & N Dunham. 1816. 288pp.
Very good condition; only light rubbing.
