1817 SAMUEL NOTT / ADONIRAM JUDSON. The Idolatry of the Hindoos with Expansive Appendix.
Superb work including both the original sermon [pp.1-36] preached for the Foreign Mission Society, and also an expansive appendix [pp.37-95] on the nature of the religion, worship, and practice of the Hindoos.
The author, Samuel Nott [1788-1869] was one of the pioneers of the ABCFM, originally ordained as a missionary with Adoniram Judson in 1812 and traveling to Indian with both Judson and Luther Rice. Not only was he an important early American foreign missionary, but his first-hand look at the slave trade made him an early and important voice to American Christians on the slave trade. He wrote on the issue multiple times all the way up until the beginning of the Civil War.
Nott, Samuel. Missionary to Bombay. A Sermon, On the Idolatry of the Hindoos, Delivered Nov. 29, 1816, at the Annual Meeting of the Female Foreign Mission Society, of Franklin, Connecticut, Illustrated by an Appendix. Norwich. Hubbard & Marvin. Printers. 1817. 95pp.
Textually very good; removed at some point from a larger sammelband.
