A rather unusual early American imprint of George Whitefield's "live" sermons. Transcribed by Joseph Gurney, one of eighteenth-century Britain’s most celebrated court stenographers, these eighteen sermons display his extemporaneous delivery rather than polished manuscript drafts, recording his dramatic rhetoric, passionate appeals, and cadence during his final preaching tours in London and North America.
Edited by Baptist minister and British Museum librarian Dr. Andrew Gifford, the collection was originally published shortly after Whitefield’s death in Newburyport, Massachusetts, in September 1770, as a sort of textual monument to the Great Awakening's most captivating field preacher. It then was brought back into print in this edition during the Second Great Awakening.
The volume opens with "A Faithful Minister's Parting Blessing," preached as a farewell sermon at Tottenham Court Road Chapel before Whitefield sailed on his seventh and final voyage to America, and synthesizes the core theological themes of the Great Awakening, including spiritual rebirth, personal conversion, and divine sovereignty.
Signed on ffep Samual Burbank, likely Reverend Samuel Burbank (1792–1845) an influential Freewill Baptist minister, editor, and publisher based in Limerick, Maine.
A pioneer in early nineteenth-century denominational publishing, Burbank authored and issued the first Freewill Baptist Register in 1825. The following year, in May 1826, he co-founded and served as one of the early editors of the Morning Star, a prominent weekly Freewill Baptist newspaper in Limerick that became a major publication within the movement.
