1826 JOSEPH HART. Hymns on Various Subjects. Calvinist, Moravian Biography & Hymns.
Very attractive little full straight grain calf edition of the deeply experimental hymns of Joseph Hart [1712-1768]. Also included is an excellent little biography.
Hart was born in London in 1712. His early life, according to his own Experience which is here prefaced to his Hymns, was a curious mixture of loose conduct, serious conviction of sin, and unsuccessful endeavors after amendment of life. Not until attending a Whitsuntide service at the Moravian Chapel at Fetter Lane, London, did he obtain a sound conversion. During the next two years many of his most earnest and impassioned hymns were written.
He died on May 24, 1768. His hymns have long been used, especially by Calvinistic Nonconformists. Many of them are of merit, and are marked by great earnestness, and passionate love to the Redeemer. The best known are: “Come, Holy Spirit, Come"; “Come, Ye Sinners, Poor and Wretched"; "This God is the God we Adore"; and "Lord, Look on All Assembled Here."
