1826 Matthew Wilks 1.5pp ALS to William Orme

Wonderful little letter that feels familiar to any who have some "dministrative challenges."  Wilks writes to William Orme informing him that he has accidently invited him to preach at Tottenham Court Chapel when he meant to invite him to the Tabernacle on the 18th of February. So, he is scheduling him at both and praises the preaching of his friend.

Wilks [1746-1829] was an important Great Awakening divine. He was installed as the pastor of the Tabernacle churches Whitefield founded in London as his successor and ordained under the Anglican herald of the Great Awakening, John Berridge [See J. C. Ryle’s Leaders of the 18th Century].

He was an animated and original preacher and has a chapter devoted to him in Spurgeon’s classic Eccentric Preachers. Spurgeon meant that as a compliment. Spurgeon himself was often accused of being such and wrote the little book as a sort of salve to himself and a polemic to others.

Remains of an early album mount, but good.
