A very rare little tractate in any state by one of our favorite 19th century authors, John Angell James [1785-1859]. A Congregationalist, he is author of the classic, in reprint by Banner of Truth now for nearly 50 years, An Earnest Ministry. The Want of the Times. He also wrote a companion work, The Church in Earnest, which is worthy of modern readership.
Always, the pastor, and always concerned with tangible piety, he authored works on marriage, on piety for young men, on female piety, on prayer, on the law of love in the community of faith, etc,. He errs in no direction; he is doctrinally solid and temperate, practical, and revivalist all in one.
The present sermon, on the role of the Christian ministry, is rare. At the head of the title it is inscribed, in the hand of James, iTo theRev. Mr. Pathan [?] with kind regards from the author.
