Josiah Priest’s 1827 volume A View of the Expected Christian Millennium served as perhaps the foundational text of Second Great Awakening eschatology, capturing the radical millennial fervour sweeping upstate New York’s "Burned-Over District" shortly before William Miller began preaching in the 1830s.

As a prominent precursor to the Millerite movement and subsequent Adventist theology, Priest’s work popularized mathematical prophetic timelines, literal interpretations of biblical apocalyptic visions, and the visual mapping of divine history, most notably through its foldout chart of dispensations and detailed mathematical calculations based on the book of Daniel. By arguing that the cleansing of the sanctuary and the end-time events were imminent, Priest established key conceptual frameworks, visual timeline methods, and millennial expectations that directly shaped the theological environment from which Seventh-day Adventism, Latter-day Saint eschatology, and modern American apocalypticism emerged.

A generally well-preserved early edition retaining the oft-pilfered prophetic chart.
