1828 JOHN THORNTON. Rare Clapham Sect / John Newton Friend on True Repentance!
A very rare copy of Thornton's heart-searching work on genuine Christianity. Thornton was British Merchant who became head of the Bank of England. He was also one of the most influential Christians of his age. He supplied Bibles by the thousands to the poor and missionaries, not to mention he chose for the position and then financially supplemented his dear friend John Newton's paltry salary of GBP 60 per year with an additional GBP 200! Thornton's half-sister Hannah married William Wilberforce. Very scarce and never reprinted.
Thornton, John. Repentance Explained and Enforced; being a Serious Appeal to Every Man's Conscience on its Nature, Necessity, and Evidences. Baltimore. G. Leidy. 1828. 189pp.
Rebound in plain buckram with morocco title. Very servicable, but not a lot of attention to detail in the binding. Text foxed, but complete and very solid.
