Very solid working copy in full calf of one of the most significant and substantive Christian periodicals of the era. Largely representative of the New Haven / Yale school of theology and revivalism of the era, the authors are largely revivalist along the lines of Asahel Nettleton, Edwin Dorr Griffin, and Nathaniel Taylor; abolitionist often in favor of colonization; and broadly Calvinistic.

The present volume, a whopping 750 pages + index, includes material regarding Bennet Tyler's views regarding the use of means in revivals and conversion, election and revival, review of Daniel Webster's speech on the Constitution, varioloid and the small pox, vaccination, origin of small pox, methodists and calvinism, extrensive review of the life, ministry, and sermons of Edward Payson, the historical nature of genuine revivals, attempts at defining the word "revival," on the justifiable nature of capital punishment, missions to China, the life and legacy of Cotton Mather, review of the life of Mrs. Adoniram Judson, Essays on Peace and War and the American Peace Society, letters on revivals of religion, domestic slavery, the Colonization Society, the Great Revival of 1742, the number and condition of free people of color in America, etc.
