A fascinating, scarce, and timely work in which influential Presbyterian divine, John H. Rice writes to James Madison, urging the broadest possible interpretation of religious liberty. Rice argues, in fact, that true religious liberty was necessary for the flourishing of true Christianity. That the union of Church and State, the imposition of Kingdom of Heaven by the kingdoms of earth was inherently fraught and a danger to authentic Christianity.
