A very smartly preserved complete illustrated set [9 volumes in 7] by Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet. Gallaudet was influential for co-founding the first permanent school for the deaf in America (American School for the Deaf), introducing French Sign Language which evolved into American Sign Language (ASL), and proving that deaf individuals could learn, think, and contribute to society, thus establishing the foundation for deaf education and culture in the U.S.. His work with Laurent Clerc created a community and a language for the deaf, changing societal views on deafness.

He also founded the first school for the deaf. In 1817, he opened the Connecticut Asylum for the Education and Instruction of Deaf and Dumb Persons (now the American School for the Deaf) with Laurent Clerc, providing the first formal education for deaf children in the U.S.
