A very attractive copy of Isaac Watts’s Horae Lyricae. The work played a pivotal role in the development of hymnody and devotional literature, establishing a theological model that bridged formal classical verse with expressive personal piety. This helped shift congregational praise away from exclusive or strict psalmody, which made rom for innovation in the worship of the Christian community and in many ways helped birth the hymn movement and the boom in 18th and 19th century Christian poetry.

Watts, Isaac. Horae Lyricae. Poems, Chiefly of the Lyric Kind, in Three Books. Sacred to Devotion and Piety, - To Virtue, Honour, and Friendship, - to the Memory of the Dead. By Isaac Watts. To which is Added, a Supplement Containing Translations of all the Latin Poems, with Notes by Thomas GIbbons. With a Memoir of the Author by Robert Southey. London. John Hatchard and Son. 1834. 112 + 298pp.

Very good in attractive period half calf, raised bands. Some light rubbing at extremities as shown. Textually exceptionally bright and clean. One leaf with a small tear in the top margin.
