An important and fascinating work from what I would call the "third stream" of the Second Great Awakening. There were of the "new measure" folks like Charles Finney, Jedediah Burchard, etc; the "old school" revivalists like Edward Dorr Griffin, Asahel Nettleton, etc., but then there were these fascinating third stream folks who were Universalists [not in the same way we might use that term today]. They were usually ultimate reconciliationist, similar to John McLeod Campbell in Scotland.

And these folks also had extensive revivals that witnessed people experiencing a robust faith in Christ and his work to save, changes lives, etc., Their primary critiques against the two streams, often explored in sermons like these or in the Universalist revivalist periodical, The Pilot, were the numbers who committed suicide under the fear of hell, doctrines like inability, etc,.

The present work both advocates for a genuine, in their view, revival of the gospel of Jesus, but also argues against both sensationalist [i.e. Finney and Burchard] and pessimistic [i.e. Nettleton, etc.] approaches. Rare. No other copies on the market.
