A very rare first edition of Alexander Campbell's magnum opus. No copies in the trade and not a single example in the auction record. The rare first edition, whose title Campbell repudiated as a printer's error, was later issued [1839] as "A Connected System." It is considered by many to be the first articulation of the Campbellite "Creed."

Of interest as well is its connection to early Latter Day Saints / Mormon works [see HERE] and its function as a part of and in dialogue with the larger array of Adventist movements of the time [see HERE].

The University of Virginia described the work in the context of the work of William Miller, the Millerites, and other Adventists of the time this way:

. . .though other millennialists such as Alexander Campbell were careful not to propose a date for the coming end of the world . . . Campbell supplemented his writings in the Millennial Harbinger with more speculative efforts such as his Connected View of the Principles which Provided Christians with Various Rules for Interpreting the "Living Oracles" of Prophecy.

The present copy belonged to, and is signed multiple times by, James B. Pyatt, whose letter to Alexander Campbell on the formation of an early Church was printed in the pages of the Millennial Harbinger:

WASHINGTON, Feb. 6, 1851. Brother Campbell: The third Lord's day in January, I held a meeting at George's Creek, and organized a church of 22 members-8 persons confessed the Lord, and were immersed in his name. There was considerable interest manifested, and I trust much good will be done. Yours, &c., JAMES B PYATT.

Campbell, Alexander. A Connected View of the Principles and Rules by Which the Living Oracles May be Intelligibly and Certainly Interpreted: of the Foundation on which all Christians Form One Communion: and of the Capital Positions Sustained in the Attempt to Restore the Original Gospel and Order of Things: Containing the Principle Extras of the Millennial Harbinger, Revised and Corrected. Bethany, VA. Printed and Published by M'Vay and Ewing, 1835. 404pp.

A good + to very copy, bound in leather with some generalized rubbing and light losses at head of spine; one signature forward in the binding, but still generally solid. Text with generally bright with some light scattered foxing and toning.
