1837 JOSEPH HALL [1574-1656]. The Works of Joseph Hall in Twelve Volumes. Spurgeon Recommended!
An absolutely shelf-lovely rare complete 12 volume set of the works of important 17th century divine, Joseph Hall [1574-1656]. Halll was influential as an academic, theologian, and controversialist both through his written works and his deeply experimental approach to preaching. It has been this combination of intellectual rigor and experimental piety that has kept his works in near-continuous print for 400 years.
Thou many of his individual works have been reprinted with some frequency, his complete works, and here with the Latin works translated as well, are nearly unobtainable.
Spurgeon said of his work on the Old Testament that if its price were raised in proportion to its real value, it would become one of the most costly books extant.
The Works of Joseph Hall, D.D. Successively Bishop of Exeter and Norwich: With Some Account of His Life and Sufferings, Written by Himself. A New Edition, Revised and Corrected: With Considerable Additions & Translation of All the Latin Pieces; And a Glossary, Indices, and Notes. Oxford. D. A. Talboys. 1837.
A very attractive set of half calf period bindings from the fine country estate of Rev. Nathaniel Bond of Holme, Dorset County, each volume bearing his bookplate. The bindings show some rubbing, but are freshly consolidated and polished. Moderate foxing, largely isolated to prelims and rears. All quite solid and clean save volume one, which is a bit stiff and shaken. Volume 1 lacks the blank ffep. A good + to very good example of a very rare set of works.
