1840 BAPTIST INDIA MISSIONS. A'Sa'Mese Dictionary with Superb Provenance & Translated by Female Missionary.
A wonderful little piece of missionary history.
The present work, printed by the American Baptist Missionary Press at Jaipur, has only appeared at auction once, in 1907. Mrs. H. B. L. Cutter was perhaps the most significant translator of the Assamese language, producing several works, though this is her earliest. Her husband. O. T. Cutter, was the primary printer at the Press in Jaipur, so they worked hand in hand to make important English works available in the vernacular and to make Assamese accessible to arriving missionaries.
The present work also signed by pioneer Baptist missionary to India, Ira Joy Stoddard. The first time, signed 1848, the year of his first arrival to India. It is then signed by his son, who returned to fulfill his father's work in 1867. See their biographies below.
Cutter, H. B. L. Vocabulary and Phrases in English and A'Sa'Mese. Jaipur. Printed at the American Baptist Mission Press. 1840. 251pp.
Fair only. Cloth is stained and shaken, as shown. Binding is shaken with signatures all intact, but unstable. The pastedowns are lifted from boards and there is evidence of dampness.
