1846 UNIVERSALIST HYMNAL. First Edition of Influential Hymnal Owned by "Wolf in Sheep's Clothing."
Very rare true first edition of one of perhaps the important of the Universalist hymnals issued in the 19th century. Eddy's bibliography even notes the first edition as 1847, though this, the true first predates it. 1008 hymns, words only. The earliest example on the market, 1853.
This copy belonged to Universalist minister, Rev. Darwin Mott. He pasted the Universalist congregation at Lowell, Massachusetts, but was prone to scandal, considered a wolf in sheep's clothing, and finally fled town with another man's wife.
Signed by him three times.
