1847-48 THE RECHABITE MAGAZINE. Temperance, Hydrotherapy, Early Anti-Alcohol Publication.
Rather scarce full year of the teetotal publication of the "Independent Order of Rechabites." They were one of the earliest and best organized of the temperance movements in England [1835], and later [1842] in the United States. After the American Civil War, their work would take on a uniquely American flair with the rise of the bar smashing pub brawling, Carrie Nation.
Their organization is evident in the publication, which includes medical, moral, theological, and pragmatic approaches to the subject, including explorations of why particular classes and people are more prone to alcoholism, the various reasons for avoiding alcohol, the treatment of alcoholism, etc.,
This copy was the property of William E. Savage of Detroit, Michigan [1867] who it seems was for some time the editor of the Western Home Journal.
