Wonderful 3.5pp lengthy 1847 ALS from Rev. Chester Field Jr to his father and family, Chester Field & Co. The younger was an influential early Methodist in New Hampshire and Massachusetts, authoring works an a frequent preacher.

The present letter spends quite some time detailing the miraculous phenomena happening at the 1847 Camp-Meeting, presumably at Wesleyan Grove [now Martha's Vineyard Camp-Meeting], though he notes it as Easthoun [?].

Amazing content:

"We attended the camp meeting this year. We had a very interesting meeting. I will mention one fact connected with it. A congregational minister went from this vicinity. After arriving there and witnessing the slaying power of God as it was strikingly exhibited there - tho he had been regarded as a very pious man, he became exceeding sceptical, so much so that he not only thought, but even said, that he thought those who were exercised in that wy [viz by the loss of their strength] were under the influence of the devil, but said that if it was the work of the Lord he wished he might experience the same. He was about to leave the tent when lo, his strength was gone and he prostrate upon the earth. After lying some hours it was restored & his views entirely changed. As I understand he experienced the blesing of perfect love; entire holiness, or sanctification. I don't care what you call it if you will only give it a scripture name. He left the ground a great friend of camp-meetings.

Full sheet, very good condition.
