A rather scarce work by influential mid-19th century divine, E. L. Magoon. He is today best remembered for bringing the works of C. H. Spurgeon to American in 1857, and writing the first biography of Spurgeon in America.

The present is a fascinating work in which Magoon argues that the Republican form of Government, and later the Republicans, represent a Christian approach to Government. He references specifically the power vested in the people [as compared with the ecclesia as the body of Christ]; the lack of a king in the Church, the intentional focus on the marginalized, poor, and, in Magoon's work, the plight of the slaves, abolition, etc.,

A fascinating early articulation of the working out of Christianity into an approach to politics and policy. Rare on the market.

Magoon, E. L. Republican Christianity: Or, True Liberty, As Exhibited in the Life, Precepts, and Early Disciples of The Great Redeemer. By E. L. Magoon, Author of "Proverbs for the People," "Living Orators of America," " Orators of the American Revolution." Boston. Gould, Kendall, and Lincoln. 1849. 422pp.

A good + copy, bound in cloth, generally solid, with light foxing.
