It could be argued that Edward Irving was the single most influential 19th century figure on the modern Evangelical Church. His translation of The Coming of the Messiah in Glory by Ben Ezra marks the beginning of premillennial thought in any real, substantial way. He then influenced the Albury movement, the Plymouth Brethren, Missionary Movements, etc., which would provide the eschatological framework for nearly all missionary, evangelical, and fundamentalist movements in America.

He also was the most vocal and articulate proponent of the proto-pentecostal movement that began in Scotland, but quickly made its way to the Scotch National Church in London, where he pastored. There, there were prophecies, utterances in unknown tongues, divine healings, and more. Importantly, his doctrine of the Spirit provided the framework for the "second work of Grace" specifically tied ot the Spirit and empowerment rather than the Methodist's "pure love."

A handled and foxed carte de visite photo of Irving dating to c.1850.
